In the case of amnesia,
walk onto the street,
get hit by a car,
wake up and read this.
In case of amnesia,
I hope you forget the parts of yourself that you hate.
Remember, you like eating and also drinking water.
I hope you don’t forget your childlike sense of wonder.
I hope you forget your fears.
I hope you remember
to laugh often,
and to hug
and to read
and to soak in the sun.
I hope you don’t try to find me.
I hope you move to a new country
and start a new life or at the very least,
I hope you work at Walgreens.
I’ve always wondered what working in
a grocery store would be like,
and Walgreens won’t have any memory
triggers that might bring me back.
I will say it again, this is your life.
So don’t seek me, I’m dead until
further notice and you are here.
This is your life.
So get to know yourself through
how the muscles of your feet feel against the ground,
how the salt of the waves slaps your
skin, or how your lungs haul for air.
I hope you get to find yourself in the silence,
and in activity, and in the friction that ignites
between two bodies that are magnetic.
Do something I never did,
don't let anyone tell you who you are.
I’m already proud of you
and you don’t have to be anyone else.
In case you worry about who you are,
don’t worry,
I never knew who I was in the first place.
